Therapy for Addiction

Addiction Treatment

There are many types of addiction. We often assume that addiction is characterized by substances, but addiction can occur through behaviors too. Behavioral addictions or non-substance addictions, like sex addiction and impulsivity, are behaviors that a person becomes dependent on and craves. These can be just as - or more - problematic as physical addictions.

Here are just a few of the addictions I treat in my practice:

  • Alcohol

  • Drugs

  • Sex Addiction

  • Pornography

  • Tobacco/Nicotine

  • Gambling

  • Exercise

  • Work

  • Codependency

  • Food

  • Video games

  • Internet/Social Media

  • Caffeine

  • Risk-taking

  • Shopping

When it’s Time to Get Help

Because most people engage in the behaviors noted above – eating, exercising, social media, etc. – it is difficult to recognize when these behaviors reach an addiction level and thus require treatment. It is time to get help for an addiction when:

  • You with mental health or physical health issues as a consequence of the behavior and/or the inability to stop.

  • You choose to engage in the behavior rather than work, spend time with family, or engage in other activities that were once enjoyed.

  • You have difficulties in significant relationships at home and, in some cases, at work, because the behavior is so disruptive.

  • You experience other adverse consequences directly caused by continued, extreme, or chronic engagement in the behavior.

  • You are not able to stop engaging in the behavior despite these consequences.

Therapy is a powerful tool for addiction. You’ll not only learn how to manage the behavior, but you'll also begin to address the root cause of the addiction.
